Formally celebrated on the 17th of May each year, the world over, GALZ together with othe LGBTI organizations in Zimbawe such as PaKasipiti, Trans and Intersex Rising Zimbabwe (TIRZ) and Trans Smart, came together to celebrate International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT) from the 13th – 20th of May 2017. The consortium created a series of events held in Harare, including a women’s event on the 13th of May and a film screening which was held on Friday May 19 2017, a day before the main event held on Saturday May 20,2017. The events saw more than 200 LGBTI people; their families and supporting institutions come together in celebration.
The celebrations were to reflect on love, family and opportunities available to further improve relations for LGBTI individuals and their families. In defining what family is, the LGBTI community is not limited. Due to segregation, stigma and discrimination, the community has created ‘families’ for themselves with people that have supported them and shown them love.
In Bulawayo, SRC, in celebration of their 10th anniversary took to planning IDAHOT in the region.
